To our way of thinking if a product has an extended warranty promotion all you should have to produce is your invoice with the date of sale on it, however sadly more often than not you do have to claim the warranty within so many days of purchase or they won't honour it.

The reasons seems to be....

A.  Many people forget or don't bother - it looks good as an offer but only a few will actually register for it

B.  Data collection - ensure you tick or untick to stop your details being used for unwanted marketing
